PRAISE NEWS

Edition 54 - March 2024

Now that a newsletter goes out every month, it gives us the chance to share many of the fun activities the children engage in. Enjoy the photos and read ahead.

6th March marked Ghana's 67th Independence Day

It was a day of celebration across Ghana. All our students made flags and at our branch in the North, they also created some great artwork.

Black History Presentation!

On the last Saturday in February, at the Learning Centre in Kitase, the children and teens presented the projects that had been prepared for Black History Month. Here are just a few of the great projects. Oh, if we had a competition for the best artwork of Kwame Nkrumah, would the winner be from the North or the East? hmmmmm...

We made a volcano that erupted!

The students have had an interesting time learning all about volcanoes. Using a cardboard box, we actually constructed one with snow included. The model had a bottle inside that could be taken out to repeat the experiment. Once everything was in place, the experiment began: vinegar, liquid soap, food coloring, and lastly baking soda. Up and out it came! Such fun!
Prior to the experiment, they had researched the topic using books and the internet, and each student made a small paper volcano craft.

Let's Rock!

Learning about the three different types of rocks was another ongoing project. One of our aims is to cover topics at the centres that we believe will be relevant in their day-to-day classroom activities.
On another note, you may have noticed, Jeanette's grandchild, Zyaire, appears in many photos. He never missed a beat, actively engaging in many of the activities during his stay with us

Plant Life Cycle

Another project the children recently participated in was learning about the life cycle of plants
Since the rains have started again, we will soon begin planting and use this opportunity to discuss what they had learned on paper.

At our branch in the North!

With all the work happening at the centre in the East, the North has also been busy. They've been learning the names of the 54 countries on the African continent, participating in letter-of-the-week activities, learning to read their local dialect, and tackling multiplication. Alongside this, we also prioritize story time, covering topics ranging from Bible stories to African history.

Look at the beautiful creations!

You may recall in the February edition of Praise News, we featured Asantewa's Creations. To recap, during Asantewa's (Jeanette's daughter) stay with us, she organised a macrame workshop. This post showcases the awesome end products. As you see, they turned out great! Do check out her website, as 10% of all profits goes to Children of the Light.

Giving colourful hygiene parcels to the elderly!

This act of kindness dates back to when Children of the Light was founded in 2005; the first lot of parcels went out in 2006. Both the children and staff actively participate by creating and colouring the envelopes, as well as purchasing soap. The organisation adds a small washcloth and extra soap if needed. We not only carry out this activity in Kitase, E/R, but the children and staff also enjoy participating in this act of giving at our branch in the North (photos below). It's an annual event, and together we distributed close to 150 parcels.

Look what's ahead!

World Water Day is on Friday, March 22nd. We have activities planned for this occasion, one of which is cleaning the local stream close to the centre and the riverbank in the North. While clean water may seem normal to some, it's not the case for many. We plan to do our small part in celebrating water.
This month, we will also be holding a teens program at the center in Kitase. Both places will celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus. Then, in early April, we have planned a Saturday for sports. Stay tuned!

Message from Jeanette

Last month, we bid farewell to Asantewa and her boys. I'd say I'm not the only one who has a love-hate relationship with airports. Anyway, with that said, I'm incredibly thankful for their visit. It was amazing.
Additionally, I want to express my gratitude to everyone who supports us. None of what has been mentioned would be possible without your generous donations. I'm deeply thankful for your consideration and support. We are now working with a lot of children, with the North alone serving approximately 250 children a week. Thank you for helping us make that possible. God bless you!
