PRAISE NEWS

Edition 55 - April 2024

It's now April, and the rainy season has begun. Since our last edition of Praise News, great things have taken place. Enjoy the photos and read ahead.

Easter Saturday @ Children of the Light

It was a special time in both places. The children prepared beautiful Easter art the week before, and on the day, an Easter message was shared, followed by a meal and Topchoco drink enjoyed by many. At our branch in Northern Ghana, 360 children were served during the celebration. We didn't expect such a large turnout, but with that said, there was enough food and drink for everyone. As you can see, finding somewhere comfortable to sit was a challenge. We are now planning to invest in more mats and benches to better accommodate such programs.

What we did for World Water Day!

The 22nd of March marked 'World Water Day.' This year the global theme being 'Water for Peace.' Sadly, the World Bank stated that in 2023, there are still around 2 billion people around the world without access to safely managed drinking water supplies. Let us all be sure to value every drop.
For this special day great projects were prepared, one on a bulletin board, a 3D description of the Water Cycle, and individual water projects. In addition, the children picked up plastic waste from the local stream in the East, as well as from the riverbank and around boreholes in the North. After the exercise, everyone enjoyed a refreshment of Topchoco and popcorn.

Teens Program!

Our Teens Program in March, with speaker, Paulett Opoku, was a great success. We had a good turnout, and the topic discussed was 'How do you develop trust?' After the discussion, the teens enjoyed a delicious refreshment of cookies, bread, and Topchoco. Thank you to Mrs. Opoku and TopChoco for your support.

Fulani Children!

The Fulani children we work with in Northern Ghana are progressing well, visibly gaining confidence in all areas of learning. Our teacher, Silas Azong, meets with them twice a week in one village. On average, around 30 students attend these classes, with a number of these children trekking to get there. We provide the children with bread and a piece of fruit during the session. To add, many attend our main events in Dibisi.

Learning About the 54 countries on the African Continent!

We have started a project at both centres, which we believe will take a little over a year to complete. That is, each week, to learn a little about each of the 54 countries in Africa. We started last week with Algeria, and this week will be Tunisia. This project will provide valuable learning for both teachers and students.

3 decades in Ghana!

On the 1st of April, Jeanette marked 30 years in Ghana, and in August, Children of the Light will be 19 years.

“Teach us to number our days and recognise how few they are; help us to spend them as we should.”
Psalm 90:12
(Living Bible Translation)

Look what's ahead!

Our regular classes continue in all locations. A teens program will be held at the centre this month, with tree planting activities to commemorate 'Earth Day' on 22nd April, and special projects to raise awareness for 'Save the Frogs Day,' on 27th April. In early May, the children will make cards for their mothers to give them on Mother's Day. Additionally, we have started working on the farm. We will provide more details about this venture and what we are planting in our next newsletter. Stay tuned!

Message from Jeanette

Reading above, you see I've been in Ghana for 30 years, and the day after, on 2nd April, I reached the big 60. With no family here, I spent days wondering what I would do. Being inspired by Pelumi Nubi, a Nigerian lady who has just completed a solo trip driving from London to Lagos, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and take on a challenge. Leaving the centre on Monday morning, I drove 4 hours to get to the Tagbo Falls Lodge in Laiti Wote. I arrived safely a little after 2 pm. That evening, I met with the tour guide, Kofi, with the plan to start the journey at 3:30 am the next morning. My goal was to meet the sunrise and have breakfast in Togo (neighbouring country). I was nervous, as my mind was racing when we started, wondering if I was really fit enough to take on this challenge. By God's grace, I made it. Photos explain it all. After our time in Togo, we then hiked to the Mt. Aduadu peak and on to the Mt. Afadja peak (Ghana's tallest mountain). The entire hike with stops took 10 hours, and I was exhausted, but it was a day I am so thankful for. The photo by the stream crosses from Togo back into Ghana.
On a final note, thank you so much to all our supporters. With you so many wonderful things are happening. Much love and blessings, Jeanette
